Making Plans Before Your New Baby Arrives

When others find out that you are pregnant then many people will gladly give you advice, even when not requested. Although many of the items are handy and work well, there are many that play upon your fears as a first time parent.
The following list tells you about the items that you will want to think about purchasing. To save money, you can even look at second hand stores for many of these items or ask friends with babies older than yours if you can borrow or purchase their items.
* A car seat is mandatory, as hospitals will not even let you leave with the baby until you show them that you know how to buckle the baby in the seat. Many times, they will also follow you to the car to make sure it is installed correctly in the car. Car seats will be outgrown at least twice before your child grows out of them by the age of eight. If you are considering a second-hand car seat, ensure that it meets safety requirements.
* A baby monitor is a great tool to be able to hear the baby from any room in the house. This way you do not have to stay close to their room all the time. At night, I recommend that you turn the monitor off because you will hear every moan and movement that the baby makes and this can keep you awake. You need to get your rest to take care of your baby.
* When you are choosing a crib, you need to look for one that has these features.
-*- Choose a good quality mattress that is firm.
-*- The mattress should fit the crib snugly on all four sides.
-*- The guardrail should be at least 26 inches above the top of the mattress.
-*- The crib slats space should be no more than 2.375”.
-*- The crib bumper will help keep the baby’s legs and arms out of the crib slats.
* A bouncy seat is a great place for you baby to be when it is not possible to hold him/her and is a great place to feed them their first meals of rice cereal. They cannot usually sit up well enough for a high chair when they begin cereals and the bouncy seat is a great answer to this problem.
* A playpen is a great way for you to get things like housework done and keep the baby safe. Around five months old is when a baby should be placed in it, unless it is used for a sleeping area when you are traveling.
The following is additional things that you need to make sure you have taken care of before your new baby arrives.
* Do you have your birth-plan detailed out and have you discussed it with your doctor or midwife and your husband?
* Is your suitcase ready to go or do you have the supplies that are need for a homebirth organized?
* Is your emergency contact list ready just in case you go into labor unexpectedly and at a time that your spouse or partner is not available or are at work?
* Do you have the nursery setup and ready for your new baby?
* Does your new baby have a family?
That last question may seem a little strange, but we plan so many other parts of our baby’s lives that sometimes we overlook the basic thing that your baby needs a family. I am not going to even get into the political battle of single moms having children, I am simply going to advocate for a family for your baby.
Your parenting goal is to build strong relationships for your child so that you will give them confidence in themselves. A weak marriage does not do this and it does not give children confidence. Good parenting flows out of a stable and good marriage. If you protect your relationship with your spouse, then your children will be happy and healthy too!
Many times when a new baby joins a family (remember that you and your husband are a family before children), the marriage is not taken care of. Many times this is because of exhaustion, lack of time, lack of energy, etc., but you need to keep your first love healthy.
Before you bring your new baby home, take the time to consider your marriage. If you need to work on your marriage, do it now. Babies respond to stress so you want to keep your home life as stress free as possible. Besides, you don’t want your baby to start out life being stressed, now do you? Keep your marriage healthy so that your family will be healthy as well. You will never regret the time that you put into it!

Baby Food Recipes – 5 Things to Consider When Making Meals for Your Baby

1. Make meals according to baby’s age.
Once your baby reaches 6 months old, you need to give him supplemental nutrients which he can get from solid foods. A number of food recipes for babies are available. But you have to choose properly which among them suit your baby’s needs for nutrients. Make meals according to your baby’s age. This is the first thing that you have to consider before making meals out of baby food recipes. Choose recipes with ingredients such as carrots and sweet potatoes. These root vegetables are easy to digest and ideal for babies who are just starting on solid foods.
2. Learn how to properly prepare and store baby’s foods.
It is important to prepare and store your baby’s foods properly. Never forget to wash your hands before and after preparing your baby’s meal. Diseases are usually acquired from improper food handling and preparation. Store your baby’s foods in tight-sealed containers. Do not keep them too long inside the refrigerator. Dispose them as soon as you see microbial build-up on your baby’s foods and containers.
3. Recognize the foods your baby is allergic with.
It is best to start your baby with solid foods that do not provoke allergic reactions. Root vegetables, cereals, bananas, apples, and rice will be your best bets. These foods are less likely to contain allergens that may trigger allergic reactions. To diagnose food allergy, check for signs and symptoms like diarrhea, vomiting, skin irritation, and swelling of the throat. Familiarize yourself with foods that have high allergen contents. One of the most allergy-causing food products for babies is cow’s milk proteins. Peanuts and eggs are also among the top food products that can cause allergic reactions to babies. During his first months on solid foods, avoid recipes with ingredients such as cheese, chocolate, yoghurt, peanut-based products, and eggs.
4. Check the ingredients of food recipes for your baby.
Before making meals for your baby, checkout the ingredients included on his baby food recipes. Pay attention to those that may provoke allergy, indigestion, and lactose intolerance. To avoid incidences of food allergy, avoid recipes with ingredients such as milk, peanuts, and eggs. Indigestion will less likely to occur if you feed your baby with meals made of root vegetables, rice, and cereals. Prevent lactose intolerance by avoiding meals out of food recipes with ingredients like cheese and milk-based products.
5. Know the nutrients your baby gets in every meal.
Take note of the nutrients your baby gets in every meal. Consider those recipes with ingredients that are high in fat, to sustain his energy, and rich in fiber, to prevent indigestion. Check the amount of vitamins and minerals he gets in every food. Continue breastfeeding him up to two years of age.

Decorating Your Newborn Room – All About Making Choices For Your Baby's Room

A baby’s on the way! And like the well prepared parents you are, choosing equipment for your child’s room and decorating it will occupy you for days on end. It is imperative though, that throughout this exciting activity, you plan well ahead of time and consider what should make its place in your child’s room.
If we all had money to burn we could buy everything in sight for our little one. But even then, more is not necessarily better. So choosing your equipment wisely will be best for both your budget and for your child. Here are a few tips to help you choose the right furnishings for a baby room.
1) Crib
The crib is probably the most important part of a baby’s room. This is where your child will spend much of his or her time unattended. It therefore has to be safe, sturdy, and convenient. Make sure the crib bars are sturdy and do not present a hazard to your child. Crib bars are usually built 2 and 3/8 inches apart. This prevents your child from sticking his or her head and body into the gaps and getting stuck. Good cribs do not have to be expensive. They only have to be functional, sturdy and safe. Check for breaks or large gaps. Also make sure that the mattress you install here is a little bit smaller than the crib space itself. Also check with the store if the crib is waterproof.
Also avoid cribs that have sharp edges as infants usually are prone to hitting parts of their body against cribs. If your crib has padding, then that would greatly reduce the chance for injuries.
2) Toys
You will have to choose toys carefully, especially when you consider the fact that some toys can do more harm than good. Some toys will pose a choking hazard to your infant. Some overexcited parents fill up their rooms with cute toys and games. Your baby, however will not have much use for these toys as of yet, so it would be better to go slow when adding toys and stuff to your baby’s room. For starters a mobile and a rattle would do fine for babies starting to crawl. Also make sure that these toys are safe, and non-toxic, since babies will generally want to put anything that fits (and even those that don’t) into their mouths. So you will want your toys to be non-toxic and non-choking. It is generally better to skip toys until they are a little older.
3) Décor
Babies are mesmerized by bright attractive colors. These colors do well to stimulate your baby’s eyesight and curiosity. Try to choose colors that are not too striking, though, as they may be too much contrast for your young one’s eyes. You could choose kiddie wall papers, and floorings to do the trick. Try to make the colors soothing however, and not too exciting. You will want your children to experience a calming environment when resting.
4) Mattresses and Pillows Choose mattresses that are comfortable, soft, but firm. Avoid fluffy and lacy mattresses as they can cause strangulation and choking. The mattress should be firm enough to support the child’s body yet soft enough for comfort. If the mattress is too soft, it could promote bad sleeping positions and will produce much discomfort.
Parents are typically excited to fill up the room with stuff for their kids. However, it would be good to remember that the basics are the most important, and most of the products being hawked for your children are probably stuff they will not need yet. So go slow, and add other décor and equipment as the need arises.
You could also consider borrowing things from relatives and friends. Their equipment, as well as their advice, would come in handy. If you would like more information on decorating your newborn room, then visit http://caringforyournewborn.myreferenceguide.com

Tips for Making Breastfeeding Easier
June 28, 2010 by admin
Breastfeeding a newborn can be a challenging experience at the best of times, let alone running a household and looking after older siblings at the same time. However, with a few tips and a little planning it can be a very rewarding experience for both you and your new baby. You will even get an excuse to put your feet up once in a while!
Plan Ahead
Think of what you need to achieve in a day and plan around your baby’s feeding and sleeping patterns. Babies are usually more settled in the morning after a good feed, so this may be the best time for you to get things done. The best thing about a newborn is that you can work while your baby sleeps or have them near you on a play mat or rocker.
Be Realistic
When breastfeeding a new baby be realistic about what you can achieve and try not to plan too much in the first few months of your baby’s life. Stick to the essentials and live by the to-do list. This will help you to focus on what needs to be done – a must for the sleep deprived brain! Once feeding is established you will feel more confident to take on more.
Buy a pump and express
If you need to spend time away from your baby it is worth investing in a quality breast pump so you can express breast milk for your baby. Your partner or carer can then give the expressed breast milk in a bottle to feed your baby while you are away. Start freezing and storing your expressed milk so you have a good supply built up when the need arises.
Look after yourself
It is important to eat healthy and nutritious meals while breastfeeding, so have a cook up and freeze easy to prepare meals before your baby arrives. Casseroles, soups and lasagnes are good examples and simply add some crusty bread and salad for a healthy meal. Make sure you drink lots of water to keep your fluids up as well.
Ask for help
Don’t try to be superwoman and do everything yourself! The housework can wait and it is much more important to catch up on sleep and rest while you can. Why not hire a cleaner for the first few months or ask a friend or relative to help out. Except any offers of help or food!
‘Me’ time
It’s important to have time out for things you enjoy, even if it is just a walk around the block, a nice hot bath or a quiet cup of tea. You will feel refreshed and as they say ‘When Mum’s happy, everyone’s happy!
Get support
Find like-minded people that can help support and encourage you while you are breastfeeding. Mums are often the best source of advice and knowing that someone else is going through the same thing can be a big relief!
Remember do your best and try not to be too hard on yourself if things don’t go according to plan. Enjoy the early days with your new baby, because they really do go too fast.

Great Ideas for Making Baby Green

Green baby gifts are increasingly easy to find, and can help a baby get a great start on an eco-friendly life. The following ideas are just a few of many ways that you can get your baby off to a great start.
Gifts for Dressing Up
Organic cotton and organic bamboo fibers not only save the earth, but also save one’s skin from chemical additives that can cause irritation and allergies. Baby skin is far more sensitive than adults’, making organic choices far preferable to other fabrics.
For diapers, the question is: which is greener – disposable or cloth? Disposables tend to be unfriendly to the environment as it takes 200 – 500 years to decompose. Cloth diapers require more energy since they require serious chemical processing to make them re-usable. A good solution is to look for more biodegradable diapers. One such diaper is gDiapers, which are breathable with plastic-free flushable refills to keep babies dry and avoid diaper rash.
Tub-Time Gifts
Skin care is also of utmost importance. There are very few regulations placed on bath products, and most are filled with undesirable chemicals for both the environment for your skin. Chemical preservatives that you have to watch out for are Parabens. Check baby shampoo, toothpaste and gels from these chemicals, as they tend to irritate sensitive skin. Rather than picking just any bath product, look for natural cleansers that have been cleared by one of several reliable environmental organizations. One great inexpensive but effective ingredient is the Baking Soda.
The Playful Baby
Lots of toys today contain polyvinyl chloride (PVC) often called ‘vinyl’ which is the second-most commonly used plastic in the world. It is also the most harmful to the environment and can potentially harm your baby, as well. During sucking or chewing, vinyl softeners can leak into the baby’s mouth. As a result, PVC baby toys and teethers have recently been banned from the market by some governments.
As an alternative, try cloth or wooden toys with non-toxic finishes, especially those that encourage creativity and imagination. As toxins are doubled indoors than outdoors, playing outside is also one of the best experiences for your baby, and it’s free!
Gifts for a Healthy Home
A new and beautiful nursery does not necessarily mean a safe one. Health risks may rest on the traditional furniture, paints and fabrics, all of which may have chemicals and toxins in them. Instead look for a natural wood crib with non-toxic finish, an organic crib mattress made of certified organic materials and fabrics, organic crib bedding for the baby’s sensitive skin, hardwood or cork flooring instead of carpets and non-PVC painting and finishes.
The Baby Traveler
Baby travelers need extra equipment. Although some plastic is better than others, glass is still the best option when it comes to transporting foods and liquids in an environmentally-safe manner. One serious concern with plastic baby bottles is the presence of Bisphenol-A (BPA) which have been found to leach after repeated use. To avoid the presence of bacteria in feeding bottles, always check them for scratches, chips and cracks, especially on the nipples. Other than glass, one good alternative is to use #5 plastic bottle or silicone
Bedtime Gifts
The crib is practically the baby’s home. As parents, we know that babies want to sleep and sleep and sleep some more. Hence, it has to not just be comfortable, but safe, as well. One great step to greening your baby’s home is to have a sustainable natural wood crib and organic mattress inside an uncarpeted nursery. Avoid Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) paint and finishes as they release low level of toxic emissions into the air even after years of application.
Accessories for the Baby
Some of the best gifts for babies are those that are both useful and eco-friendly. For example, introduce your friend to organic and biodegradable diapers, bamboo onesies, and all of the other necessities that they will go through like mad in the first few years of life.
Who could forget baby wipes? And baby wash! And diaper rash ointment! Parents will both appreciate these gifts and, even better, they will actually use them!
So if you are considering giving a baby gift, use the opportunity to promote green products; leave a legacy that you can pass on to the future generations. .
The Gift of Love
There can never be a better gift than for the whole family to provide a healthy, loving and caring home. This is a priceless gift that becomes more valuable as the baby grows into a well-rounded person ready to face the world with that special consciousness and challenge to care for the earth and his environment.
